KATHMANDU, Oct 20: Senior leader of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP), Madhav Kumar Nepal has urged the government to withdraw its recent decision not to bear the costs of treatment of COVID-19 patients.

During a pandemic, the state must provide free treatment to all its citizens, leader Nepal said in a press statement on Tuesday.

Stating that the regulation related to infectious diseases requires the government to take responsibility for providing treatment, Nepal said the government cannot shy away from its duty during a time of crisis.

The government had earlier decided to provide free of cost treatment for COVID-19 only to the poor, helpless, single women, severely disabled people, senior citizens and frontline workers. Former prime minister Nepal has maintained that such a decision is not appropriate at a time when the state should be acting as the guardian of the people.
