KATHMANDU, Dec 5: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is upgrading its infrastructure capacity to supply up to 2,000 MW of electricity to the Bara-Parsa Industrial Corridor in the next five years.

During a field visit of the location on Saturday, NEA Managing Director Kulman Ghising said the NEA is going to supply an additional 200 MW of electricity to the industries even with the existing structural setup. The NEA has aimed to upgrade the transmission lines and substations targeting the industries in Simara, Nijgadh, Birgunj, Parwanipur, Pokhariya and Prasauni areas of the Bara-Parsa Industrial Corridor.

Recently, the NEA has approved 20.5 MW of electricity to Ashok Industry and 30 MW of load to Himal Iron operating in the location. Similarly, the state-owned power utility has been reviewing the demand of Jagadamba Steel and Narayani Ispat. These companies have urged the NEA to provide 30 MW and 20.5 MW of electricity respectively.

Along with an increasing production of hydroelectricity in the country, the government has been making efforts to increase domestic consumption. According to Ghising, around 800 MW of electricity, worth Rs 5 billion, produced during the rainy season this year had gone to waste due to low domestic demand.
