Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology files cases against five firms for cheating consumers

KATHMANDU, Dec 21: Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology (NBSM) filed cases against five firms in the Kathmandu Valley on the charge of cheating consumers.


According to the NBSM, in the first five months of the current fiscal year, it filed cases against Gorakhkali Gas Centre and Matarani Trading Pvt Ltd in Ghattekulo, New Tika Dairy Centre and Yam Lal Stores in Maharajgunj and Gorakhkali Hardware in Lolang of Tarkeshwor Municipality.

Of the unscrupulous firms, Matarani Trading was found selling a lower quantity of rice than the one mentioned in the sacks. According to NBSM officials, the quantity of rice in a sack sold by Matarani was only 21 kg, but the shop had been charging its consumers the price 25 kgs. Similarly, New Tika Dairy Centre was also found selling only 300 milliliters of milk although the amount of milk was supposed to be 500 milliliters per packet.


Likewise, Gorakhkali Gas Centre, Yam Lal Stores and Gorakhkali Hardware were found operating their businesses without taking a license. According to the NBSM, it also took action against 2,708 firms during mid-July and mid-December, for tampering the weighing machines to cheat consumers.
