KATHMANDU, Jan 9: Nepal’s passport has been ranked as one of the weakest travel documents in the world, according to a report recently released by Henley Passport Index.

Nepal has been ranked 104th among the 110 countries, losing three positions as compared to 101st in 2019. Nepal has ranked one par below North Korea with only 38 visa-free scores compared to 191 scores of Japan which has led the tally followed by Singapore, Germany and South Korea.


The Henley Passport Index ranks the passports issued by the countries across the world according to the number of destinations their holders can travel without obtaining a prior visa. The ranking is based on data compiled from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which maintains the world’s largest  database of travel information, and by ongoing research conducted by the Henley  and Partners Research Department.


According to the report, Nepali passport holders have 38 destinations free-visa access while Afghanistan passport, which is at the bottom of the tally, allows its holders to travel to 26 destinations worldwide on free-visa status. Nepali passport owners need to obtain a visa before flying to 188 destinations worldwide while Japanese passport bearers shall get visa to 35 destinations. Japanese passport holders have 191-destination visa-free access.


Nepal’s passport was record strongest in 2006 as it secured 76th position while the worst status was reported (105th) in 2015.
