KATHMANDU, Aug 12: Nepal Police is gearing up to host the 23rd Interpol's Regional Conference that brings together top cops from across Asia and the South Pacific regions in Kathmandu. Nepal is hosting the conference, scheduled for 17th, 18th and 19th of January, after 27 years.
According to National Central Bureau (NCB), Kathmandu, senior law enforcement officials from 51 countries and two sub bureaus would join the mega event to devise strategies to reinforce regional efforts against transnational crimes.
Nepal Police had last hosted a similar conference during Panchayat regime in 1989 under the leadership of Hem Bahadur Singh, the last Inspector General of Police to wear 'khaki' uniform.
“Interpol's Regional Conference is a jumbo event and its successful hosting is a matter of prestige for Nepal Police,” said DSP Basundhara Khadka, who heads NCB-Nepal section of Nepal Police.
Seven different subcommittees have been formed under the coordination of AIG Bigyan Raj Sharma to coordinate with local agencies for the event and manage security arrangements, accommodations and plan other recreational or sight seeing events, among others, as per the rules and guidelines of Interpol.
More than 160 delegates, including ministers, inspector generals, observers and other high-level government officials are to participate in the conference.
The delegates will focus on terrorism, human trafficking, cyber crime, financial crimes, environmental security, and narcotics and counterfeit currencies, among others. Human trafficking will be the prime focus of NCB-Kathmandu while fight against terrorism, cross border crimes and growing cyber crimes will be other top priorities.
“We are yet to finalize our key concerns to be taken up at the international conference,” DSP Khadka said.
The event is also a major platform for sharing experiences on law enforcement, deal with the common problems in the region.
NCB-Kathmandu also expects the event would be helpful in bolstering tourism even after the devastating earthquake last year and tell the world about the post recovery progress made so far.
The 22nd Regional Conference was held in Singapore and had passed different resolutions related to combat transnational crime and their networks in the digital arena.
