KATHMANDU, Jan 12: Human Rights Watch (HRW) has stated that Nepal's transitional justice (TJ) law needs further progress.
The HRW, which has been working in the field of human rights for the past many years, released the World Report 2024 and said that the pressure exerted by the Nepal government has not met the needs of the victims and international legal standards.

The government has committed to include compensation for victims and accountability for heinous crimes under international law. However, that is not enough, according to the HRW report. Although the draft bill offers some positive steps, the report said that there are still provisions that could prevent its successful implementation.
It is also mentioned in the report that although the Supreme Court issued an order for the registration of same-sex marriages, the courts disobeyed by stating that they would not implement the decision.
The report noted that the lack of social protection has forced children to engage in child labor due to adverse economic and climate impacts and unexpected crises such as the Covid-19 pandemic.
Meenakshi Ganguly, Asia Deputy Director of HRW, said that the bill currently in parliament gives hope for progress, but it needs to be properly amended and passed into a law.
