Nepal to play leading role in the world in hydrogen energy production: Energy Minister Bhusal

KATHMANDU, Oct 10: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Pampha Bhusal has said that the government's goal is to develop water resources into hydropower and use them to produce hydrogen energy, ammonia and urea fertilizers.


Speaking at the Nepal Green Hydrogen Summit in Kathmandu on Monday, Minister Bhusal said that the government's goal is to use hydropower as a source of electricity, increase per capita electricity consumption, and use hydropower to produce hydrogen energy, ammonia and urea fertilizers.

Minister Bhusal said that a pre-feasibility study has been conducted on the production of chemical fertilizers from hydrogen using hydropower. She said that an agreement has been reached between Nepal Electricity Authority and Korea's Global Green Growth Institute on the initiative of the Ministry of Energy to advance the work of hydrogen energy production.


She asserted that to achieve the goal of sustainable development by 2030 and a middle-income country by 2026, it is necessary to develop a strong economy. She said that since the world is now making policies and developing technologies with interest and priority on hydrogen energy, determining the area of ​​consumption and conducting studies and researches, it is necessary for the Government of Nepal to chalk out a policy on hydrogen energy as soon as possible.


Minister Bhusal said that Nepal should be able to play a leading role in hydrogen energy production in the world. She said that developing Nepal's water resources into hydropower and using hydropower to develop green hydrogen will be very important for Nepal's economic prosperity, energy and food security as well as sustainable development.
