KATHMANDU, July 5: India has allowed unhindered export of fresh ginger from Nepal from Monday. This has put an end to the practice of importing Nepali fresh ginger through temporary decisions by India.

According to a notification issued by India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the ginger to be exported to India must be ‘wholly produced’ in Nepal. The new provision has permitted import of fresh ginger from Nepal but ginger from other countries won’t be allowed to enter India, according to a tweet of Embassy of India in Kathmandu quoting the notification issued on Monday. The embassy has said that the policy was adopted keeping in mind the interest of Nepali ginger farmers.

This means there won’t be hurdle anymore to export Nepali ginger to India, said officials of Nepal’s Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies.

Joint Secretary of the Ministry Rabi Shankar Sainju said that Indian market is now open for Nepali fresh ginger. However, Nepal’s annual ginger export to India is worth around Rs 500 million. But recurring hurdles from the government of India have left Nepali ginger farmers and traders dejected in the recent years and prices have seen significant fluctuations.

“This decision will definitely ensure the market for our fresh ginger but our main focus should be to add value to our ginger export and expand the market,” added Sainju.
