Nepali peacekeepers leave for South Sudan

KATHMANDU, Nov 10: The first peacekeeping team of the 8th Battalion of the Chandannath Battalion, led by Lieutenant Colonel Saroj Rana, left for South Sudan on Tuesday at the call of the United Nations.

KATHMANDU, Nov 10: The first peacekeeping team of the 8th Battalion of the Chandannath Battalion, led by Lieutenant Colonel Saroj Rana, left for South Sudan on Tuesday at the call of the United Nations.


According to the Directorate of Public Relations and Information (DPR & I), a team of 216 Nepali peacekeepers left Kathmandu for the mission area on Tuesday night. The team has gone there to replace the Gorakh Bahadur Battalions' 7th Battalion. The Nepal Army has been making significant contributions to various UN peacekeeping missions for the establishment of peace in various conflict-affected countries of the world.

Nepal ranks second in the list of countries sending the largest number of peacekeepers in the world. Nepali peacekeepers have the experience of being deployed in 43 different peace missions around the world. Currently, 5,229 Nepali peacekeepers, including 200 women soldiers, are deployed in 12 UN missions around the world.


The army has been adopting full preventive measures during the transfers with the aim of continuing peacekeeping operations even in the face of the COVID-19 transmission risk.
