BIRATNAGAR, Sept 24: Sanju Shah of Biratnagar-14 was taken to a gynecologist after severe labor pain. As fluid was continuously flowing from her body, Renu Rathi, the gynecologist advised Sanju's family to admit her to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for proper care.
Sanju was admitted to the teaching hospital of Nobel Medical College of Biratnagar. "We admitted her to the NICU," said Pawan Bikram Shah, the patient's husband.
Sanju, who was taken to the hospital in an ambulance, was taken to the birthing centre. As informed by her family members, despite labor pain, her health was fine. None of the family members had even imagined that the newborn would not survive and the mother would be battling with death after surgery. "Because of the negligence of the doctors, my son died after being deprived of the mother's milk and even my wife is fighting for life,” laments Pawan. Even after being admitted to the hospital for more than a month, there has been no improvement in Sanju's health, according to her family.
Hospital's negligence claims life of new mother
After a regular checkup on August 2, Sanju was admitted to the hospital. Though she gave birth to a son after surgery, the infant was born underweight. Later the newborn was kept in NICU but the condition of his mother was worsening. "We had not expected such negligence from the doctors and staff of a medical college. They ruined my life," said Pawan.
A nurse of the Maternity Unit gave an injection to Sanju in her upper thigh saying that would unbind the lungs of the child inside and will help in normal delivery. Unfortunately, her half body has stopped working due to the infection of the injection. "On the 19th day of birth, a nurse placed the newborn on the mother's lap for breastfeeding but unfortunately he died before he could taste her milk," said Pawan.
Pawan claims that the medicine given before surgery dried up the breast milk and the newborn could not survive only on Lactogen.
These days, Sanju can hardly move her body due to the infection. The wound has got worse and pus is flowing from it continuously. Doctors have been trying to reduce her fever by adopting various techniques but to no avail.
According to Dipesh Rai, an official of the hospital's administration unit, the deteriorating health of Sanju has been a matter of concern for all. "We all are trying our best to save her," he stated.
