BIRGUNJ, Oct 26: The students of National Medical College (NMC) in Birgunj have claimed that the college has hired bouncers who manhandled them for demanding the refund of the additional fees charged by the medical college.
The students had demanded that the additional fees charged by the college under various headers be refunded. The students claim that the college has been charging additional fees apart from the fee set by the Tribhuvan University.
The students claim that the medical colleges outside the Kathmandu Valley can charge only Rs 4.2 million per student, but NMC has been charging the students an additional Rs 1.2 million under various headings. The students claim that Basruddin Ansari, a promoter of the medical college, hired bouncers and manhandled the students, who demanded return of additional fees charged by the college.

On Thursday, student wings of different political parties protested at Ghanta Ghar, Birgunj, against NMC for charging the students additional fees. The student wings had also submitted a memorandum to Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, chief district officer (CDO) of Parsa district, with a warning that they would intensify their protest if the medical college didn’t return the additional fees charged to the students.
The college forcing MBBS students to pay an additional Rs 1.2 million under different headings such as library charge, sports fee, internet, CDP charge, among other things. “This is a national issue. The Parliamentary Hearings Committee (PHC) had been studying the issue to find its long-term solution,” Basruddin Ansari, a promoter of the college, said, adding that the committee will submit the report to the government.
He further added that the decision of the committee should be followed by medical colleges as well as students. Meanwhile, Ansari also claimed that the students from Chitwan Medical College (CMC) provoked the students at NMC to protest against the college.
“If other medical colleges returned the fees, NMC would also return the fees to the students,” he said, adding Prakash Chand, son of Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) leader Netra Bikram Chand, provoked the students to protest against NMC.
Ansari said that the college environment was spoiled when the students threatened to shut the college down. Meanwhile, Prakash Chand, coordinator of the struggle committee, said that the college hired bouncers and manhandled the students, who were peacefully protesting against the college. The students also claim that the administration has threatened to kill the students for protesting against the college.
