KATHMANDU, Nov 21: CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has drawn the attention of the government over the continuing attacks on candidates in various parts of the country and called for necessary steps to ensure elections on schedule.

At a meeting with Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba on Monday, Oli expressed his dissatisfaction over the government's failure to prevent attacks on candidates. The two leaders had met at the residence of CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal where they had gone to express their condolences on the demise of Dahal's son Prakash.

"He [Oli] inquired about the efforts made by the government toward preventing attacks on candidates. How would you conduct polls if the candidates face unabated attacks," Oli asked the prime minister, according to CPN-UML leader Bishnu Rimal.

In response, Prime Minister Deuba said that he has already instructed the authorites to clamp down hard on anti-election groups and their activities.

Meanwhile, a team led by UML leader Agni Kharel has drawn the attention of the Election Commission (EC) over the 'ongoing violation of election code of conduct'. UML leaders had handed over a memorandum to Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhee Prasad Yadav demanding strict implementation of the election code of conduct. "We have categorically presented cases of code violations by the Nepali Congress. If such violations continue right under the nose of the Election Commission, and the commission does not take any action, we also will be compelled to violate the election codes," said a UML leader after handing over the memorandum.
