CHITWAN, Dec 21: 'Operation major hunt' has started in the Chitwan National Park in a bid to control poaching of rare wild animals like the one-horned rhino and tigers.
Under the special anti-poaching campaign, a joint special troop of Nepal Army from a brigade and from army posts stationed in the CNP has been deployed in the CNP, said Ved Kumar Dhakal, the CNP chief conservation officer. The troops will patrol and provide a special security during days and at nights inside the CNP in coordination with the CNP employees and concerned bodies, he said. Sniffer dogs, domesticated elephants, vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and boats will also be used.

Winter is marked as sensitive season for poaching wild animals in the CNP with open tourist path accessible to its inner part and the buffer zone, the forests becoming deserted and the access of people's easy movements with receding river water levels. The major hunt begins at the beginning of winter every year since 2067 B.S. and lasts until monsoon begins.
