Over 1,000 fowls culled after bird flu

KARNALI, June 24: Some 1,300 turkeys have been destroyed after bird flu was detected in a turkey farm of Tatopani in Birendranagar Municipality-3, Surkhet.


A test conducted at the Central Livestock Investigation Laboratory confirmed the bird flu in turkey. A sample was sent to the laboratory after 100 turkeys died in the farm, according to Prachanda Khadka, chief of the Livestock Development Directorate.

With this, an emergency meeting of the District Administration Office in Surkhet decided to cull the fowls- turkey, broiler and local chickens in the areas within 500 meters of the farm. 


A veterinary team reached the spot and culled the fowls- 1,200 broiler chickens, 80 turkeys and other local chickens.


Chief District Officer Khagendra Prasad Rijal said that the farmers in the Surkhet Valley were made aware about the possible spread of bird flu.
