BIRATNAGAR, June 21: Incessant rainfall from Monday has inundated over five hundred houses in five districts - Morang, Sunsari, Jhapa, Udaypur and Dhankuta - of eastern Nepal. The floods have severely affected lives in these districts while causing obstruction of transportation services as well.
Madhumalla, Kasen and Hasandaha of Morong; Itahari and Pakali of Sunsari and Bhadrapur of Jhapa are the affected areas, according to Eastern Regional Police Office, Biratnagar.
Over 150 houses of Madhumalla -5 of Morang have been inundated due to floods in Bakraha and Nunsari rivulets. People from 25 households have been shifted to safer places, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Krishna Pangeni. Similarly, 20 households of Hasandaha in Morang have also been displaced due to flood. He informed that the rescue efforts are still underway.
Further, the incessant rainfall since Monday night has inundated over 250 houses in Itahari sub-metropolitan city.
The Tengra stream caused havoc in four wards of the municipality after the rivulet broke down a dam at Itahari-7 on Tuesday morning. Security personnel from Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police have been deployed in the incident site to divert the stream flow in its previous course.
The security personnel are trying hard to control the flood using sand-filled sacks. The rivulet has broken down the barrier up to 15 meters and has inundated dozens of houses.
“Ward Nos 7, 8, 9 and 10 have been affected by the floods. The locals of these wards have been displaced,” said Bodhnath Subedi, chairman of Ekata Tole Development Committee.
Around 100 houses have been inundated in Jhapa. Local authorities have been working to minimize the risk of floods. The authorities have requested the locals to stay in safe places.
Meanwhile, vehicular movement along the Koshi Highway has been disrupted since Tuesday morning due to the floods in Kharane River. The road section has been damaged due to continuous rain since Monday night. Eastern Division Road Office has said that it has been working to clear the road section.
