Issuing a press statement on Saturday, the EC said the distribution of such materials to poll campaigners and voters was against the election code of conduct. The election body has also warned the parties of taking action against those involved in breaching the election code.

EC Spokesperson Surya Prasad Sharma said that people have lodged complaints at the election body regarding the rampant use of T-shirts, caps and bags in the course of election campaigns by various political parties. Following the complaints, a board meeting of the EC has instructed the poll contesting parties to stop the distribution of such materials.

Chief returning officers and returning officers in the districts have been asked to monitor the poll campaigns and take action against the campaigners if they breach the election code.
