KATHMANDU, April, 23: Matatirtha Aunshi or Aamako Mukh Herne Din (Mother’s Day) is being celebrated on Thursday throughout the country.
People offer their mothers fruits, sweets, and other delicacies along with other presents and receive blessings from them on the new moon day of Baishakh (the first month of the Nepali calendar). This day is celebrated to honor mothers and motherhood.
Those who have lost their mothers visit Matatirtha Temple located at Chandragiri Municipality of Kathmandu. The day takes its other name, Matatirtha Aunsi, from the name of the temple.

On this day, thousands of Hindu pilgrims gather in Mathatirtha to pay homage to their mothers and worship in the temple in their memory. People take holy baths and make offerings (sida) to priests. Legends have it that people can see the reflection of their mothers’ faces on the Matatirtha pond on this day.
However, the Matatirtha Temple premise, on Thursday, wears a deserted look as no devotee has visited this holy site. As the whole country is under a lockdown enforced by the government to curb the spread of novel coronavirus, the entire Matatirtha area was shrouded in silence when our photojournalist Dipesh Shrestha reached there earlier today.
