RAUTAHAT, May 22: Police late Thursday evening raided the house of former minister Mohammad Aftab Alam, suspecting that his brother Mohammad Mahtab Alam, one of the accused of multiple murders and bombing in Rautahat district in 2008, was hiding there.
Acting on a tip-off that Mahtab was hiding in the ex-minister’s house, the provincial police raided the house.
A team of police led by DSP Gobinda Puri raided Alam’s at Rajpur Municipality-4. However, police couldn’t find Mahtab Alam there.

When the police team reached Alam’s house to carry out the raid, locals and Alam’s family members tried to obstruct the police team. Then police fired several rounds of bullets into the air to take the situation under control.
Mahtab is accused of killing over a dozen persons in a massive blast in Rautahat that allegedly left 14 dead and eight injured. He has been accused of taking the dead bodies and the blast-injured to a nearby brick kiln and throwing the bodies as well as the injured into the furnace there in order to destroy any evidence of the blast.
The blast had occurred on the eve of the CA elections in 2008 while Alam’s men were allegedly making bombs.
It was later learnt that they were making the bombs to create terror during the election and sway the vote to secure victory for Mohammad Aftab Alam, who was one of the candidates.
Meanwhile, in November, the Rautahat District Court had sent Mohammad Aftab Alam into judicial custody pending a final verdict. He is currently in the Nakkhu Jail in Lalitpur.
