A total of six traffickers were arrested from Morang while police nabbed another trafficker from Kathmandu, police said.
According to Hobindra Bogati, spokesperson at the Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, the girl was rescued from the border area. He said that the arrested traffickers are currently under investigation.
A police source told Republica that five of the arrested are male while the other two are female. Police arrested the traffickers after the girl filed a complaint with police. The source said human sacrifice could be the motive behind trafficking the girl.
The girl from Jhapa was staying in Kathmandu. She used to visit a fashion store at New Baneshwar regularly as she had just started her career in modeling. The owner was one of the human traffickers, police said.
The owner of the store brokered her ‘modeling deal’. She accepted the deal as they offered a handsome paycheck. But, after she was summoned three times for interview, the girl came into contact with the police fearing that she was being duped. She had filed a complaint with police on December 17 after suspecting that they were fraudsters.
The traffickers had told the girl that they needed a six-foot tall lady. Her height is almost six feet. They also asked her about her religion. After knowing about her religion, they asked about her family relations and menstruation cycle. Upon such queries, the girl thought something was fishy and filed the complaint.
The Metropolitan Police Range then had started a covert operation under the command of an inspector.
The traffickers made the girl wear a black dress before heading to India on December 20. The girl seemed to be subdued while she was taken across the border as police were keeping a close watch on her, said the police source. Police followed them till Morang, and nabbed the traffickers from the border.
