KATHMANDU, March 22: President Ram Chandra Paudel has stressed the critical importance of conserving watershed areas to address the looming water crisis and replenish underground water reservoirs.

In his statement on World Water Day 2024, President Paudel highlighted the alarming decline in groundwater levels due to overexploitation and urbanization.

He said that unregulated human settlements and industrialization have exacerbated water pollution, further endangering water resources.

“Groundwater sources play a vital role in sustaining ecosystems, regulating river flows, mitigating climate change impacts, and ensuring safe drinking water,” President Paudel said.

“Preserving nature and water is a pressing challenge for human civilization, essential for the continuity of life,” he added.

President Paudel expressed hope that World Water Day inspires collective efforts toward environmental preservation and water source protection.

Since 1993, March 22 has been designated as World Water Day by the United Nations to raise awareness about water’s significance, protection, and sustainable utilization.

In Nepal, this year’s theme, “Water for Peace and Prosperity,” is being commemorated through various initiatives aimed at public awareness and engagement.
