KATHMANDU, July 5: It has been found that President Ramchandra Paudel has sent a bill to the Ministry of Finance through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) for the payment of his medical expenses in New Delhi.

This comes in the wake of President Paudel earlier expressing his desire to settle the medical bill on his own when his decision to go to India for the treatment at the expense of taxpayers' money courted serious controversy.

The MoFA has written a letter to the Ministry of Finance on Monday for the release of Rs 55,02,279 including the air ambulance fare for President Paudel and his team to New Delhi for treatment. In addition to medical expenses incurred in New Delhi, the amount also includes the airfare from New Delhi to Kathmandu.

President Paudel went to India on April 19, 2023 by Shree Airlines' charter air ambulance and after treatment, he returned to Nepal on April 30 on a regular flight of Nepal Airlines Corporation.

Following the MoFA letter requesting for the reimbursement of the medical expenses incurred in New Delhi, the Ministry of Finance has agreed to give up to Rs 55,04,654 for Paudel’s treatment.

Earlier, the President's Secretariat had issued a press statement on May 2 saying that President Paudel had expressed his desire to settle the bill on his own amid huge criticisms that President Paudel was unnecessarily flown to India for treatment at the expense of taxpayers' money.
