Prez, PM condemn Sri Lanka attacks

KATHMANDU, April 22: Nepal has condemned Sunday’s bomb blasts in Sri Lanka that killed over 200 people and injured several hundred. 


In separate messages sent to their Sri Lankan counterparts on Sunday, President Bidya Bhandari and Prime Minister KP Oli said Nepal strongly condemns the criminal acts against humanity. Both president and prime minister said that Nepal unequivocally condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations in line with its principled position, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).

President Bhandari and Prime Minister Oli have expressed heartfelt condolences to their Sri Lankan counterparts and through them to the bereaved families. 


In his message to Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister Oli expressed his firm belief that the perpetrators behind these criminal acts will be brought to justice at the earliest. Prime Minister Oli also had telephone conversation with his Sri Lankan counterpart on Sunday evening.


Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Gyawali also expressed condolences to the families of the victims.


Nepalis safe

MoFA officials said it has no report of any casualty of Nepali nationals in the incident. “We have not received any information about the casualty of Nepali nationals in the incident,” said MoFA spokesman Bharat Raj Paudyal.


NC condemns the incident

Meanwhile, the main opposition party, Nepali Congress (NC), has also condemned the Sri Lanka blasts. “Nepali Congress has always been advocating that murder and violence have to come to an end once for all. At this hour of grief, I express sympathy to Sri Lankan government and people of Sri Lanka on behalf of my party and myself. I also urge you to move ahead with patience,” the party’s president Sher Bahadur Deuba said in a statement.
