KATHMANDU, Oct 2: The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland has proudly announced Professor Mark Liechty as the recipient of the inaugural Surya Subedi Prize for his outstanding work, "What Went Right: Sustainability Versus Dependence in Nepal's Hydropower Development."

They recognized that the book narrates a compelling story, that of the dedicated and persevering career of Odd Hoftun, who emerges as a development hero. While the book primarily explores the history of hydropower development, it resonates across various sectors of development and beyond. Professor Mark Liechty is a renowned South Asianist with expertise in the modern culture and history of Nepal. He holds positions as a Professor at the departments of Anthropology and History at the University of Illinois at Chicago, USA. His teaching portfolio encompasses subjects such as world history, South Asian colonial history, cultural theory, youth culture, and the cultures of the body. Professor Liechty's research has received support from various organizations, including several Fulbright research awards and a recent Fulbright "Senior Specialist" grant dedicated to Nepal.
