Progress toward SDGs disappointing

KATHMANDU, Sept 24: Due to the lack of proper information at the level of people's representatives, there is a challenge in the implementation of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) even after six years, according to experts.


During a discussion with media persons on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals organized by the Women, Law and Development Forum, Daya Sagar Shrestha, coordinator of the Sustainable Development Goals National Network Nepal, said that there was a problem in the implementation of SDGs due to the lack of political affiliation and commitment.

Among 193 countries in the world that have signed the SDGs, the progress of goal 16 has been disappointing. The goal 16 mentions peace building, inclusiveness and social issues and has 12 quantitative targets and 32 monitoring indicators. The government's review in 2017 and 2020 did not include much data on Goal 16. Similarly, there was no progress on goal 16 even before the COVID-19 pandemic.


The SDGs target to reduce poverty to five percent by 2030. Coordinator Shrestha said that an additional budget of Rs 600 billion is needed annually to achieve the SDGs. Advocate Binu Lama, program coordinator of the forum, Kritagya Rai and others stressed the need for coordinated work among the three levels of government to achieve the SDG target.
