Protest held against death penalty decree by Sri Lankan president in capital

KATHMANDU, July 2: Various organizations including the Amnesty International Nepal have launched peaceful protest against Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena's signing on June 26 a decree for executing death sentence to four people convicted of drug offense.

KATHMANDU, July 2: Various organizations including the Amnesty International Nepal have launched peaceful protest against Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena's signing on June 26 a decree for executing death sentence to four people convicted of drug offense.


Along with AI Nepal, Advocacy Forum, Accountability Watch Group, Jury Nepal and Common Platform of Conflict Victims protested in front of the Sri Lankan Embassy at local Maharajgunj today.

The Sri Lankan government had suspended death penalty for the last 43 years but had announced through a notice on June 26 that the four accused persons would be executed.


Amnesty International Nepal's director Nirajan Thapa said adopting a heinous and inhumane punishment like the death penalty even in the 21st century is a matter of shame for the modern society. He asserted that there should not be provision for death penalty no matter how heinous the crime is.


 A delegation from Amnesty International Nepal also met with the Sri Lankan ambassador for Nepal, Sworna Parera, and drew the attention of the Sri Lankan government to its inhuman and objectionable decision to execute those convicted of drug offence was against the human rights, especially a person's right to life and the right against torture. The Sri Lankan ambassador on the occasion expressed commitment to inform the Sri Lankan government on this matter.
