JANAKPUR, May 16: Lawmakers of Province 2 Assembly were divided over Chief Minister Lalbabu Raut’s remarks made during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Nepal visit.

While lawmakers from the ruling parties defended Raut, lawmakers from the opposition parties criticized him.

“The chief minister has committed blunder by raising internal issues of the country at a wrong place. It is inappropriate to make such reckless remarks for someone who is bound by law,” said CPN-UML lawmaker Sundar Bahadur Bishwakarma at the provincial assembly meeting on Tuesday.

Addressing the civic reception organized to felicitate the visiting Indian prime minister in Janakpur last Friday, Raut had said that the constitution promulgated in 2015 was discriminatory against Madhesi people and that they were still denied the rights of a provincial government as enshrined in the new constitution.“Even today our struggle against the discriminatory constitution and for provincial rights continues,” he added, in his attempt to draw the attention of the visiting Indian prime minister.

Similarly, another lawmaker from CPN-UML Manju Kumari Yadav said that the chief minister should apologize for his unconstitutional act.

However, lawmaker of Federal Socialist Forum Ram Ashik Yadav said that it was unfortunate for lawmakers from some parties to criticize Chief Minister for the remarks. “The chief minister rightly stated the real problems Madhesi people are facing,” he added.
