Rain-triggered landslides sweep away 21 houses in Lamjung

LAMJUNG, July 23: At least 21 houses were swept away by landslides that occurred in Marsyangdi Rural Municipality-3 of Lamjung district on Wednesday.


The incessant rainfall for the past three days triggered the landslide in a rural village in Tarapu Pallotari area at 9:45 am on Wednesday, according to a press release issued by the District Administration Office, Lamjung.


"Nineteen houses were swept away by the landslide on Wednesday morning and two more houses were hit by the landslide in the evening on the same day," Chief District Officer Krishna Prasad Sharma told Republica Online over the phone.

Of the total 80 households, 21 were completely buried in the landslide. Additionally, nine houses were partially damaged after the landslide hit the village, according to Sharma.


Eight people sustained injuries when the landslide struck the entire rural village, Sharma said.


One of the critically-injured has been rushed to Bharatpur for further treatment while seven others who suffered minor injuries are undergoing treatment in Besisahar, the district headquarters.


Amid rainfall, a huge amount of boulders has kept falling from the mountain adjacent to the village on Thursday as well.


"Following the incident, 61 houses are at high risk and we have shifted landslide-hit 400 people to a safer place nearby," CDO Sharma said.  


Nepal Police, Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, Red Cross and local organizations have expedited rescue operations.


Landslide debris has covered the entire village. Dozens of domestic animals have also been buried. Authorities have yet to ascertain the damage caused by the landslides.
