As COVID-19 cases are making new records every day, the government on Sunday “hinted” at imposing lockdown to curb the spread of the virus. Speaking at a press conference, Minister for Foreign Affairs (MoFA) Pradeep Gyawali, the government spokesperson, said that the government will be forced to make hard decisions to save people’s lives.


More than 200 people in every 100,000 are likely to contract COVID-19 in the Kathmandu Valley. According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, 200 or more are likely to contract COVID-19 in the Valley out of every 100,000 people.

Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Giriraj Mani Pokharel, has been diagnosed with the coronavirus. Pokharel, who was admitted to Patan Hospital on Saturday evening after developing mild fever, tested positive for the virus on Sunday afternoon after a PCR test. His health is stable, according to a member of the minister’s secretariat. 


The Kathmandu Valley recorded 1,416 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, taking the Valley’s COVID-19 case tally to 41,586. Of the 2,071 new cases across the country, 1,416 were recorded in the Valley alone.


The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) confirmed 2,071 new cases of coronavirus in Nepal on Sunday. A total of 12,427 real-time PCR tests were conducted on Sunday, said the ministry’s spokesperson, Dr Jageshwar Gautam. 


Of the eight countries in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Nepal has the lowest recovery rate of 70.3 percent and the highest percent (29.2) of active cases. According to the data issued by the health ministry, Pakistan has the highest recovery rate of 95.3 percent followed by the Maldives (89.3 %) and India (85.5 %).
