KATHMANDU, Dec 24: Birgunj Customs Office (BCO) collected customs revenue worth Rs 88.69 billion in the first five months of the current fiscal year, which was 52.50 percent more than the amount collected during the same period of the last fiscal year.
According to BCO, the revenue collection amount under the heading surpassed the targeted amount by Rs 6.08 billion. The office received a revenue collection target of Rs 82.61 billion for the period between mid-July and mid-December.

Birgunj customs is one of the main entry points for Nepal’s trade with India and the third countries. An increase in exports and imports following a decline in infection cases of the coronavirus has led to a notable rise in revenue collection. “Over the period, imports of automobiles, petroleum products and industrial raw materials have increased significantly,” said Sumit Gupta, information officer for BCO.
Meanwhile, a total of 290 units of electric vehicles worth Rs 891.59 million were imported through the Birgunj Dry Port during the review period. The government collected customs revenue of Rs 1.21 billion from the imported electric vehicles.
