KATHMANDU, July 17: Differences between the ruling and opposition parties in the full House has been reflected in parliamentary committees as well on Tuesday as the main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) lawmakers sought deferral of the parliamentary committee meetings and ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) opposed the idea.

Citing the ruling of Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara on Monday to the Members of Parliament to visit their constituencies and coordinate the rescue and relief activities, the opposition lawmakers demanded deferral of the State Affairs Committee (SAC) meeting as well. NC lawmakers were unhappy with the speaker for deferring the House meeting through a notice ignoring their demand for deliberations on the floods and landslide situation.

As SAC Chairperson Shashi Shrestha didn't postpone the meeting of the committee on Tuesday, opposition MPs demanded that the parliamentary committee be deferred as they have been told to visit their constituencies to coordinate relief efforts.

The SAC had invited lawmakers who had registered amendment proposals on the bills related to federal and provincial police for discussion. But NC lawmakers Dilendra Badu, Dila Sangraula, Amresh Singh and Dibya Mani Rajbhandari among others demanded suspending the business of parliamentary committees in line with the speaker's ruling.

Although Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa and Chief of Nepal Police Sarbendra Khanal were invited to the committee for deliberations on the police bill, they didn't get time to discuss the bill after the committee discussion engage in the bill after the committee diverted onto various other issues.

Following pressure from the opposition lawmakers committee Chairperson Shrestha held separate meeting with some influential lawmakers in the committee on whether to defer the committee meeting or not. Amid protest by the opposition, Shrestha has scheduled the next meeting for Wednesday.
