DAMAK, Nov 2: A group of single women in Damak of Jhapa district have united for entrepreneurship. After being trained in commercial production of sanitary pads, they have collaborated and started to work together.

“We don’t have to worry about the market,” said Khem Kumari Oli, member of Single Women Group, Damak. “The municipality buys all the sanitary pads we produce.”

After forming the group, single women from nearby areas ventured into the production of sanitary pads which has not only given them a means of livelihood, but also enabled them to make regular savings.

“Working together in group helps us share our experience. We have a feeling of togetherness,” said Oli, a resident of Damak-5. She used to run a small tailoring shop at her house before starting the venture.

Ambika Shrestha of Damak-10, another member of the group, hopes to acquire additional skills in clothing and expand her income. She said if she hadn’t been involved in producing sanitary pads, she would have been idling her time at home. Likewise, Gayatri Bhattarai of Damak-8, said the new skill and work have given her a meaningful way of spending her time.

The group comprises of 24 single women aged 29-35 years. “They bring in their experiences and share their skills in the group,” said Sabitra Prasai, coordinator of the group.

“This venture has motivated women to become financially independent.”

In addition to buying the sanitary pads, Damak Municipality also provides the women with all the required material – cloth, sewing machine, and other equipment. The municipality pays them Rs 40 per pad, which motivates the group members to produce more. The municipality distributes the pads to different schools for free distribution to female students.
