Sanskrit education must be modernized: Prez Bhandari

CHITWAN, Feb 6: Admitting that the Guru-Shishya (teacher-student) tradition has played a pivotal role in imparting knowledge, President Bidya Devi Bhandari expressed her concern toward the declining trend of Gurukul education system.

CHITWAN, Feb 6: Admitting that the Guru-Shishya (teacher-student) tradition has played a pivotal role in imparting knowledge, President Bidya Devi Bhandari expressed her concern toward the declining trend of Gurukul education system.


President Bhanadri said it has been quite challenging to revive and protect this age-old tradition which has been overshadowed by the influence of western education system. President Bhandari made such comment during her visit to Devghatdham on Tuesday to inaugurate the Devghatdham Birat Gyan Mahayagya, 2075. During the occasion, she stated that this traditional education system helps to produce disciplined and educated citizens.


"Gurukul education is the foundation of today's education," said President Bhandari, adding, "Sanskrit education must be modernized and preserved."

She urged the authorities responsible to continue this tradition so that the new generation could have the knowledge and pass it on to the next generation.


The president said it is sad that the new generation has shown no interest in learning Sanskrit. 


During the program, President Bhandari even inaugurated the four-storey building of Mahesh Sanskrit Gurukul with 42 rooms. This building was constructed with a budget of Rs 45 million funded by 35 donors and the grant provided by a university.


This gurukul has been running classes from sixth grade to the undergraduate degree. The gurukul, which provides free shelter and education, has 250 students. Established in the year 1994, this school has been operating on donations provided by well wishers.
