KATHMANDU, April 6: The Supreme Court has issued a show cause order over a writ petition filed against the government's decision to grant a public holiday on the 'People’s War' day. According to the order of Justice Hari Prasad Phuyal, the government has to disclose the reasons for granting a public holiday on ‘People’s War Day’ within 15 days and submit it to the Supreme Court.
The current government led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal had decided to give a public holiday on Falgun 1 (according to Nepali calendar) in the name of 'People’s War' day. Against that, Kalyan Budhathoki and other victims of the conflict filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court. The writ petitioners have sought an order to cancel the 'People’s War' day holiday.

After the government declared a public holiday in the name of 'People's War' Day, it was widely criticized. The 'people's war' declared by the then CPN-Maoist against the Nepali state started on Falgun 1, 2052 and lasted for 10 years. About 17,000 people died in the armed conflict. Many are still missing and many others are left mutilated. The Dahal-led government had decided to give a public holiday on Falgun 1 to honor the 'people's war'.
