SC issues interim order not to implement the Citizenship Bill

KATHMANDU, June 4: The Supreme Court (SC) has issued an interim order not to implement the Citizenship Amendment Bill that was certified by President Ram Chandra Paudel last week.


A single bench of Justice Manoj Kumar Sharma on Sunday issued an interim order not to implement the Citizenship Bill.

Senior advocates Surendra Bhandari and Balkrishna Neupane had filed a writ petition against the Citizenship Bill.


The Ministry of Home Affairs had already issued circulars to all the 77 District Administration Offices to issue citizenship in line with the new law effective from Sunday. However, SC order bars the government from issuing citizenship as per the new provision until the court issues a final verdict on the issue.


President Paudel certified the Citizenship Bill on May 31. The Citizenship Amendment Bill has been widely criticized.
