KATHMANDU, June 29: At a time when certificates of medical doctors are being investigated, the Kathmandu District Education Office is all set to collect and scan academic certificates of teachers working at public schools of the district soon.

The Teachers' Service Commission (TSC), which recruits permanent teachers and issues teaching licenses, blamed other government bodies for failing to examine the certificates of teachers.

“We are not responsible for examining teachers' certificates. It is the responsibility of other bodies,” said Sudarshan Marahattha, spokesperson for the TSC.

Before the second peoples' movement, the Ministry of Education used to methodically scan the certificates of government school teachers in coordination with District Education Offices and District Administration Offices.

“However, the certificates of school teachers are not being thoroughly examined in recent years,” Khaga Raj Baral, director general of the Department of Education, said. “District Education Office and District Administration Office are responsible for scanning the certificates of teachers,” he added.

“We will circulate a letter tomorrow to all schools asking them to send the academic certificates of their teachers,” said Shankar Gautam, district education officer of Kathmandu. “Certificates of all the teachers who joined the government service after 2003 will be scrutinized,” he added.

There are a total of 4,80,114 teachers working at government and private schools across the country.
