He was the candidate of the Maoist Center in Bara-2 in the last House of Representatives election. But he was defeated by the then JSP candidate Ramsahay Prasad Yadav by a margin of 354 votes. A by-election is held on April 23 after Yadav was recently elected as the Vice President.

Kushwaha is now preparing to contest the by-election in Bara-2. He said that he wanted to contest the election as an independent, but because people asked him to contest the election from the party, he decided to join the Janmat Party.
