Sixth Gorkha Earthquake Memorial Day being observed today

KATHMANDU, April 25: The sixth memorial day of the Gorkha Earthquake that occurred six years ago is being observed on Sunday by conducting various awareness programs while maintaining health safety standards. On the occasion, the National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) has organized workshops regarding the impacts of earthquakes, the lessons learned and the achievements made so far by the agency. According to the NRA Joint-spokesperson Manohar Ghimire, work papers will be presented at the program and experts will comment on them as well.

KATHMANDU, April 25: The sixth memorial day of the Gorkha Earthquake that occurred six years ago is being observed on Sunday by conducting various awareness programs while maintaining health safety standards. On the occasion, the National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) has organized workshops regarding the impacts of earthquakes, the lessons learned and the achievements made so far by the agency. According to the NRA Joint-spokesperson Manohar Ghimire, work papers will be presented at the program and experts will comment on them as well.


On April 25, 2015, an earthquake of 7.6 magnitude on the Richter scale shook the country around midday at 11:56 on Saturday. The disaster on that fateful day took the lives of 9,071 people and injured 22,309. The earthquake damaged about one million private houses, 7,553 schools, 49,681 classrooms, 544 health facilities and partly damaged over 653 of them. Similarly, 415 government buildings, 170 monuments of the World Heritage Site, 920 cultural heritages and 383 buildings of security forces were damaged in the quake. According to the NRA, 3,212 drinking water structures, 53 roads, and 299 human settlements were damaged.

Some 14 districts including Okhaldhunga, Dolakha, Ramechaap, Sindhupalchowk, Kavrepalanchowk, Sindhuli, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Kathmandu, Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Makwanpur were severely affected by the Gorkha Earthquake. Similarly, 18 districts including Samkhuwasabha, Bhojpur Khotang, Solukhumbu, Chitwan, Tanahum, Lamjung, Kaski, Parwat, Naglung, Myagdi, Syanga, Palpa, Gulmi, Agrakhanchi, East Nawalparasi, West Nawalparasi were also affected by the earthquake, though not as severely as the 14 districts mentioned above.
