Babu Kaji Maharjan of Balkumari, Patan, started as a farmer to make ends meet. Later, he jumped ship to the Ministry of Finance to work as a truck driver. Meanwhile, he also lent hands for the renovations of Patan Durbar Square in his prime. But at 73, Maharjan -- a frequent visitor to of the ancient square -- feels disheartened when he is asked for the cover charge to enter the palace grounds that he helped rehabilitate. Nonetheless, he finds solace when he is with his wife Nhuche Maya. The couple is blessed with three daughters and two sons who all have children of their own. However, the negligence towards Nepal Bhasa and Newar culture by the new generation concerns him. “I have seen a lot of changes in the people. What matters to me the most is when my grandchildren call their parents mommy and daddy instead of maa and baa,” he stated.
