Born in Khotang and raised in Morang, Sameer Rai is the owner of two Kathmandu eateries. He was passionate about restaurants since his childhood. So right after completing his secondary level education he moved to the capital in 2003 to follow his passion. He also worked as a waiter in some of the renowned hotels of Kathmandu including Hotel Hyatt and Radisson. After gaining two years of experience in the hotel fraternity, he decided to work abroad. One of his family friends suggested to him to try for Qatar. He applied as a casino waiter and moved to Qatar in 2006. After a decade-long experience in several international hotels, he returned. Rai started a small restaurant named Jhamghat Restaurant in Sundhara. It slowly caught on for lunch and snacks. Recently he extended a branch at Khichapokhari with the name ‘Vintage café’. His restaurant is serving hundreds of costumers and is providing employment to more than 20 youths. When asked about the difference between the food businesses abroad and in Nepal, Rai said, “There is a huge difference. The major differences are in management and marketing. Here we have to struggle for basics like fuel, water, electricity which are the fundamental requirements in resturant management.” Adding, “Lack of employees is another major obstacle. Since majority of youths are abroad, it’s really hard to find employees for restaurants.” However, Rai is satisfied with his business and is looking forward to expanding further.
