ROLPA, Aug 23: Of 3,531 examinees from Rolpa in the last academic year, 2,198 are appearing for SEE grade improvement examination that started on Sunday this week.
Highest of them, 2,044 students are attempting Mathematics followed by 1,257 seeking an upgrade in English. 189 and 187 have applied for grade improvement in Science and Social Studies respectively. 124 examinees have sought grade improvement in Nepali, 116 in Health, Population and Environment, 62 in Optional Math, 61 in Education, 30 in Economics, and 25 in Geography.

The teachers are discontented with the result, mathematics in particular. Negligence attitude among the students is the reason behind the poor result, according to them. They claim that most of the students go to school either fear of the teachers or pressure in the family.
LM Acharya, a mathematics teacher from the district, however, opines differently. He says, “Radical change in the education sector has not been possible because the schools lack subject-teachers as well as we conduct classes without teaching aids.” He further adds, “The teachers rarely make lesson and other instructional plans. That’s why we have not been able to arouse interest among the students.”
“Students do not have a hard-working habit. On the other hand, we lack adequate subject teachers,” said Krishna Pun, headteacher at Nepal Secondary School, Kotegau.
As many as sixty per cent teacher’s seats are vacant in Rolpa. To address the lack of government seats, local community appoint teachers paying a very low stipend which results in poor sustainability of teachers.
However, no plan is formulated regarding the improvement of education status. Local authorities, teachers and parents hardly seek measures to sort out the issue.
