KATHMANDU, Nov 18: Nepal Fertility Care Center (NFCC), an NGO working for reproductive health for over three decades in Nepal, has organized the historic event by lighting up Swayambhunath temple in teal color to raise awareness about cervical cancer. Teal is the color of cervical cancer worldwide.

The lighting up event was organized coinciding with the landmark announcement made by the World Health Organization (WHO) on November 17 to accelerate efforts to eliminate cervical cancer. The event was organized in solidarity with the cause and with countries across the world which lighted up their national monuments in teal to mark the announcement, according to the organizer.

"This important announcement will help increase the attention on and prioritization of cervical cancer, which is leading killer of women in Nepal and yet totally preventable with a comprehensive national program that offers and ensures regular screening and timely treatment of women 30-60 years of age and vaccinations of adolescent girls and boys," the NFCC said in a press statement.

Every year in Nepal 2942 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and 1928 women die of this cancer. The number of death resulted from cervical cancer, experts say, could be reduced to zero with an increase in awareness.
