KATHMANDU, Feb 21: Nepal Tarun Dal, a youth wing of the Nepali Congress, has presented a copy of the Constitution to President Bidya Devi Bhandari in a symbolic protest against her "unconstitutional move" to set aside the previous government's recommendations for appointment of National Assembly members.
The youth wing handed over the Constitution to the president through Prahlad Pudasaini, chief at the Office of the President at Sheetal Niwas, on Wednesday, informed Bhupendra Jung Shahi, the youth wing's general secretary.
Justify it
"The president has taken an unconstitutional step by ignoring the recommendations made by the Deuba-led government,” General Secretary Shahi said, adding, “For this reason, we gifted a copy of the constitution to President Bhandari for her to read.”
Shahi along with the chairman of Nepal Tarun Dal, Jeet Jung Basnet, and other party representatives had visited Sheetal Niwas Wednesday.
A meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Tuesday recommended Dr Yubraj Khatiwada (Jhapa), Ram Narayan Bidari (Makawanpur) and Dr Bimala Poudel-Rai (Morang) for the appointment of upper house members.
Nepali Congress has also objected to the president's action of ignoring the recommendations made by Deuba-led government and appointing others recommended by the KP Oli-led government.
NC has protested against the Oli led government for its decision to recommend new NA members, quashing the recommendation made by erstwhile Sher Bahadur Deuba-led government. The Deuba-led government had recommended the names of Chandani Joshi, Gopal Basnet and Krishna Prasad Poudel as the new NA members.
