Asif Shah, who we recently got to know as ‘Dari’ in the film ‘Dui Rupaiya’, believes in living life one moment at a time, which is probably the reason why he has been able to fit in so much into his years.

Shah, who started his career in 2002 as a TV presenter, has since then come a long way and today we know him as a singer, actor, director, and producer as well. And in each one of these fields, Shah has proven than he really has what it takes to be one of the most sought after talents in the industry. The Week’s Ashma Chhetri spoke to the versatile man to know more about what goes on in his creative mind.

Acting in films, or hosting TV programs, which one do you prefer?

When I was hosting TV shows, my only job was to present the script given to me the best way I could. Here I could do things my way. But acting in a movie is completely different. You have to be able to portray characters that might be completely different from how you are. These two are entirely different creative avenues, which is why picking one is difficult because each has its own pros and cons.

But you sing, act, and direct as well. Which among these is your favorite?

Despite the fact that onscreen opportunities have their own charm, I’m exceptionally comfortable working behind the scenes. I think I can best express my creative abilities and imaginations through direction rather than anything else. I think directing suits me because it goes with my temperament and mindset. I like to be able to call the shots.

How do you handle the challenges that come your way every single day?

Every morning, the first thing I do is prepare myself to control my temper throughout the day. Regardless of how stressful the situation is I don’t usually react to it immediately or in public.

But when I am with my teammates, the anger and frustration usually come out. It’s safe to say they bear the brunt of it. But I’m fortunate enough to have people who are aware of this habit of mine and don’t take it personally.

What goes on in your mind when you looking back at your journey so far?

The fact that I never planned out my life but it just took shape somewhere along the way is fascinating to me. I always believed in going with the flow and that’s what I did. And, with that, I think I have definitely come a long way. I joined television because my friends persuaded me to do so.

It was then when I realized that I enjoyed directing and producing content. I then turned to directing movies and music videos. I also sang and acted as well because I wanted to explore these creative fields too. I think being impulsive has helped me in my career but it would also not have been possible without a can-do attitude.

What are the three words that describe you best?

First, I would have to say that I’m an extrovert. I can make friends quite easily, even if I’ve just met them.

Second, I’m a huge foodie. I enjoy food and feel it’s the only thing that can comfort me when I’m having a particularly bad day.

And third, I’m an avid traveler. I travel whenever I can. A change in my immediate surrounding recharges me and Pokhara always comes first in my list of ultimate travel destinations.

Why do you think the audience should go watch ‘Dui Rupaiya’?

The movie is entertaining. That much I can guarantee. You will not regret having spent two hours in a theatre. The story is interesting and you will enjoy getting to know the characters. Also, the light comedy will leave you delighted. Regular cinemagoers will definitely appreciate this movie.

Do you have any advice for aspiring actors, singers, and directors?

No matter which profession you pursue, the only thing that matters is the decisions you make. Listen to your heart and don’t complicate matters by over thinking things. If you feel something is right for you, and you can do it, do it. Even if you fail, try again and again till you eventually succeed.
