UNITED STATES, Nov 6: Three Americans of Nepali origin are contesting the mid-term elections in the United States today. Election will take place for all 435 seats in the US House of Representatives and 33 seats in the Senate, 36 seats of Governor, State Senate among others.
Nepali-origin candidates elected in US midterm elections
Harry Bhandari is contesting from Maryland as a democratic candidate in the Congress after winning inter-party elections by securing 5,941 votes. Bhandari is expected to win the elections as the democrats have a stronghold in the region. If Bhandari is to win, he will be the first American from Nepali origin to secure a place in the Senate.
Likewise, Madalsa Gurung is also contesting in the Congress from New Hampshire for the democrats. Pradeep Dhakal has filed his candidacy in the city council in Virginia. As the number of Nepalis soar in the United States, more Americans from Nepali origin are vying for political power. According to a data, of the 300,000 Nepalis residing in the United States, more than 62,000 have adopted American citizenship.
