'Transparency a must for prosperous society'

KATHMANDU, Sept 19: Representatives from various sectors of the society including politicians, media persons and experts working in the field of governance have stressed on the need of making the government bodies more transparent and accountable.

KATHMANDU, Sept 19: Representatives from various sectors of the society including politicians, media persons and experts working in the field of governance have stressed on the need of making the government bodies more transparent and accountable.


Speaking at a program on transparency and accountability organized by Nepal-US Alumni Network, they opined that transparency is the key to create a just and prosperous society.

Lawmaker Gagan Thapa, who was invited as a keynote speaker of the program, said there is no alternative to liberal democracy in Nepal. “And, transparency and accountability should be used as a tool for this governance,” said Thapa.


Krishna Hari Baskota, chief commissioner at the National Information Commission, emphasized on the significance of Right to Information for a democratic and transparent rule.


The participants discussed on how to promote integrity, Right to Information, open budget survey, and investigative journalism.


The seminar, which was attended by a diverse group of people including members of civil society, government officials, academicians, and journalists, aimed to create a platform for dialogue to explore ways of making governance transparent and accountable at federal, provincial, and local levels.
