The first broad-gauge train arrives in Janakpur


LAHAN, Sept 18: Nepal began the trial for the operation of its first broad-gauge railway service in Janakpur on Friday.


The Jaynagar-Janakpur railway service remained halted for the past six years. When operational, it was operated in a narrow-gauge system.

The first railway service — Raxaul-Amlekhgunj Rail Service -- in Nepal was established in 1984 BS by the British Government in India which stopped its operation after 38 years in 2022 BS.


Likewise, in 1994 BS, the Jayanagar-Janakpur-Bijalpura Railway Service came into operation which came to a halt after 76 years in 2071 BS.


After six years, the government of Nepal has begun trials for the operation of the Jaynagar-Janakpur-Bardibas Railway Service through a broad-gauge system on Friday, according to the Department of  Railways, Janakpur office. 


Two years ago, the Nepal government had reached an agreement with the Government of India to buy two sets of broad-gauge trains. Those trains arrived in Jayanagar on Thursday from India.
