Turkish president offers condolences over Yeti Airlines plane crash

KATHMANDU, Jan 18: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sent his condolences to his Nepali counterpart over Yeti Airlines plane crash in Pokhara on Sunday.


In a message sent to his Nepali counterpart Bidya Devi Bhandari on Wednesday, President Erdoğan expressed deep condolences over the fatalities and offered sincere sympathies to the bereaved families of the plane crash victims on behalf of the Turkish government and the people.

In the condolence message, President Erdoğan wrote, “I learned with great sadness that many people lost their lives due to the crash of a passenger plane on the Kathmandu-Pokhara flight on January 15. On behalf of my nation and myself, I convey my sincere condolences to your excellency, the friendly people of Nepal and the families of those who lost their lives in the accident.”


Earlier on Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a message of condolence to President Bhandari.


An ATR 72-500 series aircraft of Yeti Airlines with the call sign 9N-ANC, which flew from Kathmandu to Pokhara at 10:33 am on Sunday, was scheduled to land at Pokhara International Airport at 10:58 am. However, while making the final approach for landing, the plane suddenly crashed into the Seti River gorge near the Friendship Bridge between Pokhara Metropolitan City-7 and 15.


There were 72 people including 68 passengers and four crew members on board the ill-fated aircraft. The dead bodies of 71 people on board have been retrieved as of Tuesday morning, while one passenger is still missing.
