Two more middlemen involved in fake Bhutanese refugee scam arrested

KATHMANDU, May 10: Among those accused of being involved in a racket of sending people to the United States identifying them as Bhutanese refugees, police arrested two persons from Baneshwor, Kathmandu, on Tuesday.

KATHMANDU, May 10: Among those accused of being involved in a racket of sending people to the United States identifying them as Bhutanese refugees, police arrested two persons from Baneshwor, Kathmandu, on Tuesday.


Those arrested are Ram Sharan KC, residing in Tokha, Kathmandu, and Govinda Chaudhary from Morang district, informed Spokesperson at the Kathmandu Valley Investigation Office and Superintendent of Police (SP)  Rabindra Regmi.

The two were arrested for their alleged involvement in the racket as the middlemen, said SP Regimi adding they were handed over to the District Police Range, Kathmandu for further investigation and action against them.


The District Police Range is currently investigating the incident by filing a charge against them under organized crime. The police were given 60 days of time to investigate the incident.


Earlier, police held Indrajit Rai, who served as security advisor to the then Minister of Home Affairs Ram Bahadur Thapa, the then Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs Tek Narayan Pandey, Sandeep Rayamajhi, Keshav Dulal, Sanu Bhandari, Tanka Gurung, Sandesh Sharma and Sagar Thulung, in connection with the scam.


Police said that they were searching for CPN (UML)'s secretary and former minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi to whom an arrest warrant has been issued. Rayamajhi is currently out of contact, police said.


So far, 106 victims of the fake Bhutanese refugee scam have filed complaints at the police office. They lodged complaints noting the middlemen or fraudsters fleeced over Rs 230 million from them at different times giving them a false hope to send to the United States.
