Two-wheelers to become expensive with govt raising excise duty rate

KATHMANDU, September 11: The prices of two-wheelers are likely to go up as the government has hiked the excise duty on imported motorbikes by up to 20 percent through the revised budget.

Announcing the budget through a substitution bill on Friday, the government raised the excise duty on motorbikes with engine capacity between 125 cc and 155 cc by 10 percent while those with engine capacity between 500 cc and 800 cc by 20 percent.

In the revised rates, the motorbikes with engine capacity between 50 cc and 125 cc have to pay an excise duty of 40 percent. Similarly, the two-wheelers that come between 125 cc and 200 cc have to pay 50 percent in excise duty. Likewise, the ones in 200 cc to 250 cc have to pay 60 percent and 500 cc and above need to pay 100 percent excise duty.

A motorbike buyer now has to pay additional Rs 15,000 to Rs 50,000 in excise duty alone while purchasing a new vehicle.
