KATHMANDU, Feb 5: Umesh Shrestha, a central member of the Nepali Congress, has approached the Election Commission (EC) demanding that he be declared elected from Chitwan Constituency No. 2.

Rabi Lamichhane, the chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) was elected from Chitwan-2 with 49,264 votes, while Shrestha was second with 14,983 votes. On January 27, the Supreme Court scrapped Lamichhane’s candidacy from Chitwan-2, arguing that he did not have a valid Nepali citizenship while filing his nomination for the elections last year.

Shrestha claims that even though there was a complaint about Lamichhane’s citizenship, he was wronged when the Election Commission did not make a timely decision.
